What to look for in a watch travel case

A watch thrown loose into a bag is one bump away from a scratched crystal or a dented case. A good travel case keeps it still, keeps it apart from everything else, and takes up as little room as possible. Here is how to choose one.

Start with how many you take

  • One watch. A single travel case is slim enough for a jacket pocket or the side of a carry-on. Our single cases hold the watch on a large velvet cushion, fixed with push pins or a firm push button.
  • Two or three watches. A weekend away often means a daily watch and something dressier. Our 2 and 3 watch cases add velvet dividers so the watches never touch.
  • A whole collection. For a longer trip, a move or storage in a safe, the Carbon Fibre 10 zip case closes fully around ten watches and has a carry handle.

Roll or structured case?

A watch roll is soft and flexible, so it packs into gaps in a bag and lies flat in a drawer at the other end. A structured case has a firm shell that takes knocks better, which suits checked luggage and anyone who travels often. If your watches are valuable or your bag gets thrown around, choose the structured case.

Check how the watch is held

The watch should sit on a cushion that fills the strap or bracelet, fixed so it cannot slide off. Push pins and push buttons both work well. A removable cushion is handy too: it lifts out so you can fit the strap without fiddling, and it can stand on a bedside table as a watch stand.

Genuine leather or leather-look

Genuine leather softens and darkens with use and looks better with age. Leather-look finishes are lighter on the wallet, wipe clean easily and hold their shape. Both protect the watch equally well, so choose by look and budget.

A few travel habits worth keeping

  • Keep your case in your carry-on, not checked luggage.
  • Wind or set your watches before you leave, so they are ready when you arrive.
  • Use the case at the hotel too. It is the safest place for a watch you are not wearing.
